Fonts of the best kind

Following up on the bad fonts story I posted some days ago, I found this story on typographica about the best fonts of 2006. It’s their choice though which means their opinions might and probably will differ from your own but then again, everything’s a matter of taste, ain’t it? So go check it out, there are quite a few nice fonts on there and there’s even one that stood out in my eyes named Estilo because of its very simplistic shapes.

And remember, these are fonts that were released during 2006 so if you’re expecting a bunch of Helveticas, you’d be sadly mistaken.

Wallpaper: “SeaStyle”

Alright, so here goes my first wallpaper of this new era. It’s a nice underwater piece which will hopefully calm you down in moments of stress. If you’re one of those people that go through hundreds of blogs a day — like I might do from time to time when I’m on my “non-existing life” side of life — then you might see some resemblance with Wolfgang Bartelme’s very impressive — and oh so very widescreen — “DeepBlue” and you’d be right to see so. The guy has an exquisite eye for what looks good so I decided I would try to learn from him. After a couple of hours of going through his devkit of DeepBlue, I finished my version of the “digital underwater world” with grass and everything and to be honest, I think it looks rather good realy. I had fun learning this stuff.

Another thing I’d just like to mention is that the preview that you see above — although slightly modified — is also taken from Bartelme’s site just because it looks good and I didn’t really feel like learning anything new — like how to make an Apple Cinema display — today. So Wolfgang, if you happen to be pissed off because of this, let me know and I’ll get busy making my own preview thingy. If you actually see this as a compliment — which I really hope you do — then I would just like to say thank you! Actually, I’d be lucky if I could get you to come by my blog and have a “quicky”. Also, I’d like to thank some deviantArt people for a couple of brushes. I’ve lost track of who made which brushes and I’m sorry for that but if you recognize your brush, then I’d like to say thank you to you too.

Fonts of the worst kind

I was so wildly navigating the world wide web when I suddenly stumbled upon an old but interesting article about some of the worst fonts ever made at the LMNOP blog. It’s even a little bit funny and as I said, it’s old, so some of you might have read it already.

Nevertheless, it’s interesting and very true. It’s not about the absolute worst fonts ever, it’s more about the worst fonts ever that are still in use all over the place without people realising how bad they actually look. Go and have a look… ehmm… read!

Some things never change

It’s true, that’s the sometimes brutal reality we all have to face. In 1984, I was born in Uruguay, South America. It’s always been my home, even though I wouldn’t leave my current home — Sweden — for anything. But Uruguay will always be in my heart no matter what, and that’s why I’m so pissed off right now because I just finished watching the semifinal of the Copa America in Venezuela between Uruguay and Brazil. The uruguayans actually worked their asses off all game long and managed a 2 - 2 tie after 90 minutes and it all came down to penalties. Of course, we started with a miss but after a couple of saves and misses, Uruguay had the chance to end it all by just making the freakin’ goal on their seventh penalty shot. Pablo Garcia steps up… shoots… hits the post and misses! The rest is history.

You say, “That can happen to anyone!”. True, but I say “Bulls***!”. It’s always been this way… if they win, they still make everyone sweat until the last second of the game. If they don’t win, everyone gets mad because we’ve probably had the chance to go further but we BLEW it.

As aforementioned, I’ll always love my home country but really, some things never change and I wouldn’t bet on someone trying to do something about it any time soon.

Along came the MacBook Pro…

… and I passed out for a second. I like to think of myself as an up-to-date guy on tech news and computers and gadgets and all that crazy stuff, but seriously… it’s like I’ve never had an idea of what a computer was until I opened my very own MacBook Pro this morning. Sure, I’ve poked around here and there on a PowerBook and iBook — which I don’t have anymore — and iMacs, eMacs and a Mac mini — which I do have — and pretty much any Apple computer really. But… having my very own MacBook Pro with a hi-resolution glossy 17-inch widescreen and a whole bunch of awesome internal hi-tech computer “organs” beneath its skin… well, that’s just freakin’ crazy man! I feel so ALIVE… ehmm… doesn’t that sound like something someone WITH a life would say? Meh, I don’t care!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and admire my purchase for a while.
